Why Wheat Can be Bad for Your Health

For years society has led us to believe that grains should be a staple in our ever day diets, toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and pasta for dinner. Well it turns out that all this wheat can be bad for your health and in particular the health of your gut.

Well I am here to tell you why we should reduce the amount of grain we are consuming.

1)  All types of wheat including whole wheat, has a high glycemic index (GI), which over time can increase your glycemic load and create Type 2 Diabetes. Wheat also contains a complex carbohydrate which is broken down quickly in the mouth and can raise your blood sugars by more than 6 teaspoons of sugar. To put this into perspective, two slices of bread can raise your blood sugar by more than a chocolate bar.

2) A diet high in carbohydrates, such as bread, will create too much dangerous low density cholesterol which can clog blood vessels.

3) Wheat contains 'gladin' which is addictive, it stimulates our appetite throughout the day and impairs our ability to say no to other carbohydrate rich foods. It also causes food obsession and unbearable hunger. A lot of pre-packaged foods contain wheat to stimulate you appetite and keep you coming back for me. Clever!

4) In the 1970's genetic manipulations were used in order to create a high-yield, short and stocky grains, which meant that the changes altered the amino acid profile. This has resulted in different effects to our digestive systems compared to those of the early agricultural grain.

5) The consumption of wheat stimulates an excess of female hormones in men which in turn reduces testosterone, creating man boobs and erectile problems.

6) Wheat contains a starch called 'amylopectin A' which sets off a cycle of deep abdominal belly fat. Extra belly fat makes inflammatory chemicals that promote estrogen dominance which can increase the risk of cancer in men and women.

7) Around 10,000 years ago agricultural products like wheat where introduced, since this time human health has declined in comparison to that of the traditional hunter gather cultures. Early agricultural people showed signs of cavities, short stature and lower bone density, none of these symptoms have been found in the hunter gatherer's.

8) Many people eat bread for its fiber, when in reality wheat actually causes constipation, the opposite effect most people expect from fiber. Instead get your fiber from fruits, vegetables and nuts.

9) In some people the consumption of wheat can create depression, rage and anxiety due to interference with the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (see my blog on Being Happy for more information of stress and serotonin)
