Calories

Ok so we all know that food containes calories, but what are these things called calories, how do we use them and what do they contain?

A kilocalorie is the amount of energy that is required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree. A calorie is 1/1000 of a kilocalorie. You body metabolises (burns) calories for energy. While all calories provide energy for the body not all calories provide nutrients, minerals and vitamins. The best know empty calories are those found in sugars and alcohol.

So what nutrients do we get from these calories and how many calories are in these nutrients?
